If you are using Google Sites you are probably already familiar with the concept of adding images to your pages. However, something you may have not noticed yet, is that when you add images by the "Insert" menu in the editing page, the image will be available to your page of course, but you lose its control level.

As of 2008/11/29, Google Sites has not provided any tools to handle the images uploaded in this way.

On the other hand, if you use the "Attachments" option instead, here is what you get:
  • Change history control: your attachment has version control as well, and once you add it, it will be also available when you try to add a new image in your page (to add newer revisions, simply, upload the file with same name, as previously stored in your page);
  • Link to other pages: I would not  recommend this, but you may also re-use the uploaded images from other pages (only if they are attachments) into other pages, by detecting their links (click in the image link, then you will find out);
  • Remove option: allow you also to remove unwanted attachments, which does not happen if you just upload them directly.
As you can see, here in the Attachments section, you can have the usable images with Remove option and version control:

For adding them into your current page, simply go to Insert > Image, and they will be there available to you:

Note:
The sidebar sections are one exception that you may not use this tip, because they do not offer the Attachments option. In this case, either you just forget about this and place the images directly in the Insert Image option, or you may get them from a File Cabinet type page.

So, here is a good reason to adopt the Attachments style rather then the direct Insert Image upload tool. Maybe Google Sites will improve this in future, but for those currently using it as production environment, such workarounds just are a necessity.
